A Prescription for New Moms and Socially Minded Businesses

A joint statement from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) just published in the journals Fertility and Sterility calls for doctors to help patients reduce their exposure to chemicals. “Reducing exposure to toxic environmental agents is a critical area of intervention for obstetricians, gynecologists, and other reproductive health care professionals,” it reads.

More consumer awareness about the link between disease risk and the ingredients in our household cleaners and personal care products continue to support a natural products industry, much of it to be on display this week at the category’s largest natural, organic and healthy products trade show on the East Coast, Natural Products Expo East.

The list of exhibitors is a veritable who’s who of companies, new enterprises and pioneers that elect to use natural and non toxic ingredients like The Jojoba Company which makes all natural personal care products with no pesticides, the makers of Ecos household cleaners made without toxins and many more.

Beyond Expo East, global category leaders like Johnson and Johnson and Campbell Soup Company are making changes in response to science and consumer requests. J&J is in the process of reformulating many of its personal care products to eliminate potential carcinogens while Campbell’s said that it will phase out the use of the toxic chemical bisphenol A (BPA) in its can linings.

While ultimately it is the conscious shopper who decides what to bring into the house or put in her body, her behavior is encouraging responsible businesses to better scrutinizing how they manufacture their products for a healthier population. Leading companies aren’t waiting for government regulations to force their changes, instead they are ahead of the curve and setting the standard.
