Join the 9/11 Tribute Movement

Today I joined the 9/11 Day Movement and encourage you to do it too.

9/11 Day is the international non-profit movement to observe September 11 every year as a day of charitable service and doing good deeds. It was created to provide a positive way to forever remember and pay tribute to the 9/11 victims, honor those that rose in service in response to the attacks, and remind people of the importance of working more closely together in peace to improve our world.

The movement’s slogan is “I will.” All you need to do when you join is pledge to do a good deed. You don’t need to solve the root causes of society’s failings. Maybe all you can muster is a smile. Maybe you can do more and give your time in a classroom. There are a number of suggestions on the website. Celebrities and every day people share their pledges on YouTube.

In the tragedy of 9/11 no one thought about their “responsibilities” or “obligations”. The raw emotion of the unthinkable transcended any sense of obligation. Everyone acted first and thought second. The 9/11 Day Movement for good deeds intends to capture that instinct. We’re not obligated to do anything. We choose to honor those who died by being positive, even if just for a moment.

So, for my pledge: I will make a donation to our local library and advocate louder for the good work at Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine where I serve on the board, providing crisis support to victims and delivering root cause solutions to educate young people about treating others with care and civility.
